Graded Music exams > Learning Platform
Yes, candidates are permitted to use the RSL Learning Platform during a graded music exam. Please note the following:
- Candidates need to ensure that they have an active monthly or annual subscription. This fulfils the requirement to present the relevant Grade Book for the exam.
- Candidates are responsible for providing their own device for operation of the Learning Platform.
- The examiner is unable to assist with logging in. If the candidate relies on the Learning Platform and does not have the Grade Book, it is crucial that the candidate logs in before the exam. We strongly recommend testing the log in well in advance of the exam.
- Candidates are responsible for connecting their device to the internet in the exam room. Candidates should contact the exam venue in advance to check arrangements for this. Note that RSL Awards cannot guarantee that all exam venues will have wifi or internet access.
- Examiners will provide candidates with a 3.5mm aux cable to connect their device to the exam room PA. Candidates should ensure their chosen device has a compatible input socket and/or provide any necessary adaptor.
- Candidates will be required to control the Learning Platform during the exam including starting and stopping playback of backing tracks, and should therefore be familiar with its controls and functions to allow for smooth operation during the exam.
- Candidates are only permitted to use the “Backing Track” playback option during the exam, not the “Demo Audio” or “Click Track” options. Please note that not all published backing tracks may be available via the Learning Platform, eg. versions incorporating clicks.
- Songs must be played at the default tempo. Any alteration to the tempo may result in loss of marks.
- Use of Learning Platform playback options is limited to elements of the exam which require backing tracks e.g. songs/pieces, riffs, quick study pieces, technical studies etc.
- For elements of the exam played without a backing track e.g. scales, arpeggios, chords, technical exercises, solo pieces etc., candidates may use the Learning Platform to read the music, but any click tracks, if requested or required, will be provided by the examiner.
- The examiner will not be expected and may not be able to troubleshoot operation of the Learning Platform. If there are any problems with using the Learning Platform in the exam, the examiner reserves the right to revert to normal procedures for playing the backing tracks.
